DBT Skill - Managing Extreme Emotions

‘Managing Extreme Emotions’ is a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skill.

This skill can used when we experience an extreme skill breakdown. This happens when we are overwhelmed or shut down. We might struggle to use a skill and be effective in the moment. Some things you can try if you are having difficulty managing extreme emotions include: 1. Check the facts. Are you really falling apart? Can you in fact, try a skill? If yes, use crisis survival skills. Eg: TIPP, distracting yourself, self-soothing or improving the moment. 2. Return to mindfulness. 3. Call a crisis line. 4. Talk with your mental health clinician about your experience and problem solve future solutions in your next session.
